Zurich has definite cultural appeal… With its beautiful museums such as the National Swiss Museum and the Fine-Arts Museum, as well as a rich theatrical scene, this city is a wonderland in cultural terms. The old-town, right on the banks of the Limmat, boasts beautiful architecture with for example the Fraumünster or the Maison Le Corbusier… Nothing beats a weekend in Zurich to invade the boutiques along the Bahnhofstrasse and enjoy a good meal in a prestigious setting…
Founded in 58 BC, Zurich was little more than a fortified burgh named Turicum.
Throughout the 11th and 12 centuries Zurich was ruled by a succession of kingdoms (the Ottonian Dynasty, the Salian Franks and then the Germanic Empire) before adhering to the Swiss Confederation in 1351. Zurich adopted the Reformation in 1523 thanks to the influence of Huldrych Zwingli.
The city's ramparts were destroyed in the 19th century and the city began to modernise and trade under the guidance of Alfred Escher. Zurich was relatively unaffected by the two World Wars and thus today boasts an exceptionally well preserved architectural legacy.
National Swiss MuseumThe National Swiss Museum is a veritable art institution whose reputation extends far past the borders of Switzerland. Ranging from Prehistory to the present day, the museum's permanent collection is a panorama of the country's cultural and intellectual development through the ages.
